Marc Overmars to Newcastle United latest: Compensation issue and Man Utd-linked manager wanted

Newcastle United are considering former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Marc Overmars for the role of sporting director.

The 48-year-old, who is currently technical director at Ajax, is believed to be one of a number of names in the running to move to Tyneside.

Former Monaco director of football Luis Campos and former Chelsea supremo Michael Emenalo are also reportedly keen on the role.

However, the Magpies would have to stump up compensation for the current Ajax director - paying up a two-year contract.

Nonetheless, the Mirror claims that the Toon have opened talks with Overmars who has grand plans of his own.

The former Ajax winger has a growing reputation for identifying, recruiting and developing world-class talent during his nine year stint in Amsterdam.

Overmars has reportedly been told he'll have all the resources made available to him to put into place a grand plan to lift Newcastle to lofty heights.

The technical director would also like to appoint his own manager - current ajax boss Erik Ten Hag.

The 51-year-old rejected the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer and is one of the names linked with replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United.

Ten Hag's current contract at Ajax expires at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Personal terms are not expected to be much of a stumbling block for Overmars, who could quadruple his current earnings with a move to St James' Park.

It's reported that the Magpies new owners want value for their money and the Ajax director would bring just that.

Ajax have won four Eredivisie titles during Overmars' tenure at the club as well as two Dutch Cups.

The Eredivisie outfit have also qualified for the Champions League group stages seven times, reaching the semi-final in 2019 only to lose against Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs, before reaching the quarter-finals last season.

A feat made more impressive by selling around £600million of talent in the process - including the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt for around £131million.
