Marc Overmars breaks silence on Arsenal links to replace Edu as Ajax chief reveals offers

It proved to be a hectic summer for Arsenal, who were busy in the transfer market as they looked to strengthen their squad for the 2021/22 season.

They ended up as the Premier League's biggest spenders, with Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Takehiro Tomayasu all joining the club.

Although not all of those have been available at once, technical director Edu has come under increased scrutiny for how he recruited in the summer window.

In August, reports claimed that the Gunners had lined up a list of potential replacements to succeed the Brazilian should they decide to let him go.

Marc Overmars is someone who has been linked to the role, having spent the last nine years in a similar position at Ajax.

Edu returned to Arsenal in 2019, but a selection of supporters are displeased with the Brazilian’s decision to spend heavily on inexperienced players.

However, Overmars has opened up about being linked with a move away, but is keen to remain with the Eredivisie champions despite admitting he's 'considered' a switch.

"As I’ve said before a number of times we’re really enjoying ourselves," Overmars told Ajax TV. "We’re moving in the right direction. The four of us form good management and that’s important.

"We’re like a family, we’re close. And that’s important too. And who knows, we might have some good news soon.

"I’m not getting any younger. I’ve been offered the opportunity to go elsewhere too. That’s what happens and it’s always good to consider a move.

"But then I just think about how well things are going here. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If your old shoes are still comfy, keep wearing them."

Having spent three seasons at the Gunners in the late 1990s, Overmars grew a strong relationship with the fans and went on to score 41 times in all competitions.

He did, though, have a rather successful stint at his native Ajax and is currently their director of football, helping them to win a number of Dutch league titles.
