Marc Guehi: Liverpool book medical as £35m fee agreed with Crystal Palace

Incoming: Marc Guehi - (London Standard)

Marc Guehi is set to undergo a medical with Liverpool after Crystal Palace agreed a £35million deal to sell their captain.

Guehi, who started and scored as Palace secured their first win of the season away to Aston Villa on Sunday, will sign a five-year contract at Liverpool.

Palace, meanwhile, are set to receive a fee for the 26-year-old, who has just one year remaining on his contract.

Liverpool and Palace entered negotiations at the start of August, but an agreement was not able to be reached, with Guehi seeking assurances over playing time ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Guehi, who captained the Eagles to the FA Cup last season, has maintained that he would be happy to see out his contract at Palace and leave on a free next summer.

Palace, however, did not want to risk making a loss on the £20m investment they made in Guehi after signing him from Chelsea in 2021.

Manager Oliver Glasner reiterated after Palace’s win over Aston Villa that he wants Guehi to stay and said a suitable replacement would have to be found before sanctioning the Englishman’s departure.

Palace have identified a number of centre-back options, including Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji, to replace Guehi, but have, as yet not signed anyone.

Guehi’s arrival marks another huge deal for Liverpool, who are also set to confirm a £125million British transfer record deal for Alexander Isak.

The double Deadline Day deal will take Liverpool’s summer spending beyond an estimated £470m.
