Marathon runner dressed as Big Ben gets to finish line - but can't cross it due to awkward problem

After months of dedicated preparation and 26.2miles of pain and exhaustion, every single London Marathon runner would have been delighted to see the finish line yesterday.

More than 40,000 people of all ages and abilities took part in this year's event to push themselves to the limit and raise money for charity.

But one of them attracted a little more attention than most in the final minutes of his race - thanks to a rather annoying issue with his costume.

Lukas Bates, from Maidstone, Kent, tried to get into the Guinness World Records Book for fastest marathon time dressed as a landmark in an impressive Big Ben costume.

But as he went to run over the finish line he quickly realised his costume was too tall to fit under the clock - meaning he wasn't actually able to cross.

A steward ran to help him but even with both of them trying to manoeuvre him it wasn't working, and before long another runner was also trying to get him under.

In the end he had to get down on his knees and half crawl under - quite possibly the worse thing to have to do after running a marathon.

It's the fifth time Lukas has run the marathon, and his personal best is two hours and 59 minutes.

He decided to don the outfit for this year's race to race money for Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer's Research UK.
