Mapped: These are the Bolton neighbourhoods hit hardest by the coronavirus, according to new official figures

New figures have revealed the neighbourhoods in Bolton hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic.

Farnworth North, Lever Edge, Breightmet North and Horwich East have seen the most residents die after being infected with Covid-19, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

An interactive map published by the government shows the true scale of coronavirus deaths across Greater Manchester, and shows how each postcode has been impacted by the virus.

The data reveals area by area deaths in the period March to May where coronavirus was mentioned on a death certificate as a cause.

There have been 22 deaths in the Farnworth North area of Bolton, the worst area for the coronavirus-related tragedy across the borough.

Farnworth councillor Maureen Flitcroft, said: "It's so sad that our area has such a high fatality statistic. My heartfelt sympathies go to all those that have been affected by this terrible virus.

"Please can people be sensible and responsible members of the community by following government guidelines to help us beat this.

"Everyone needs to play their part in this fight."

Yet, despite the widespread impacts, the data map also shows areas where very few COVID-19 deaths were officially recorded.

Westhoughton Daisy Hill and the Halliwell and Brownlow Fold areas have recorded three and two deaths, respectively.

Health officials say the ONS figures correspond with locations of care homes, where there has been a higher than average number of deaths connected to COVID-19.

The number of deaths linked to the virus has been ‘falling steadily’ since mid-April.

The UK death toll has now passed 40,000.
