TORONTO _ Nobody probably expected a goaltending duel Saturday between Calvin Pickard and Michael Hutchinson, but for the longest time it was.
Then, Toronto finally solved Pickard, the Wings' backup goalie called up for Saturday's game from Grand Rapids, and wound up defeating the Wings, 4-1.
Two goals each for former Michigan Wolverine Zach Hyman and Auston Matthews provided the Leafs' scoring, backing Hutchinson's 29-save victory.
Tyler Bertuzzi (power play) scored in the final minute for the Wings, his team-leading 13th goal.
The Wings will have nervous moments until Sunday wondering about Anthony Mantha, who was thrown onto the ice by Jake Muzzin late in the third period, Mantha going after Muzzin after the Toronto defenseman hit Madison Bowey.
Mantha was down on the ice briefly, and looked groggy as he left the ice with the help of Bowey and trainer Piet Van Zant.
For a while, the Leafs couldn't solve Pickard, who replaced Jonathan Bernier after Bernier suffered a lower-body injury 6 minutes, 52 seconds into the game.
Pickard gave up six goals in a 6-1 loss to Philadelphia last month in his only previous appearance. Saturday he kept the Leafs off the board for nearly two periods and matched Hutchinson save-for-save.
Hutchinson hadn't been making any saves, period, in the NHL this season, so that the Wings had difficulty scoring against him is fitting, given this season.
Hutchinson came into the game with an 0-5-1 record, with a ghastly 4.55 goals-against average and .876 save percentage.
But Hutchinson stopped Dylan Larkin on a breakaway on the game's first shift, actually made several good saves in the opening minutes, and had his best game of the season after that.
Hyman gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with his 7th goal, a strange one, at 17:10 of the second period.
Hyman drove down the middle of the ice, but was hauled down by Mike Green. Before Hyman crashed into the net, the puck somehow got through Pickard, putting the Leafs on the board.
After the Wings failed on a power play early in the third, a Filip Zadina tripping penalty deep in his offensive zone gave Toronto a power play opportunity.
Matthews scored his 22nd goal, beating Pickard from the dot at 2:18.
Hyman then made it 3-0 with his eighth goal, a nifty backhand goal off a rush at 8:51, while Matthews scored his 23rd at 13:39.
By that point, Pickard had been solved, and the Wings (9-25-3) were headed to a third consecutive loss and 15th in their last 17 (2-13-2).
