Map shows where lightning strikes hit Scotland during dramatic night of thunderstorms

A map has revealed the extent of lightning strikes when thunderstorms raged throughout Scotland earlier the week.

Forecasters warned of the storms days in advance of their eventual descent on the country on Tuesday evening.

The Met Office said that there would be spells of heavy rainfall, lightning and even hail storms during the period of extremely unsettled weather.

Thousands of Scots woke up to scenes of devastation as entire streets were flooded due to the adverse weather conditions.

Videos emerged on social media of incredible lightning strikes in eastern Scotland as the storms wreaked havoc on the country.

Lightningmaps.org has mapped out where each of the strikes took place from the 24 hours that followed 6pm on Tuesday.

It shows how areas surrounding Edinburgh, Borders, Fife, Dundee, Perth and Aberdeenshire were mostly impacted by lightning during this period.

The capital and the Lothians saw the highest concentration of strikes, which may have had a part to play in the outage of internet services in the area.

BT sent specialists out to the area to resolve problems with its broadband services, as thousands were unable to access the internet throughout Wednesday morning and afternoon.

Flights also had to be diverted in the area as the storms continued on throughout Tuesday evening.

Yellow weather warnings have now moved south of the border, with most of England and Wales expected to see thunderstorms over the next five days.

Things are starting to look more settled up this way - which will be a welcome to relief to so many in Scotland.
