Map shows the 4 Nottinghamshire postcodes with Covid rates significantly higher than average

Residents have been urged to follow lockdown guidance strictly as data revealed four areas with significantly high Covid-19 rates.

Data from Public Health England's interactive map showed the four major hotspots for virus cases across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire - with one district particularly affected.

The figures, accurate for the seven days ending January 6, show three areas in Ashfield currently have rates higher than 800 cases per 100,000 people.

This is significantly higher than the England average of 629 cases per 100,000 people.

Selston is currently the worst-affected area in the county, recording a rate of 876.7 in the week ending January 6 after 59 cases were recorded in the village.

Further north in Ashfield, Sutton Central and Leamington has a rate slightly lower at 842, with 67 new cases recorded in the seven-day window.

Neighbouring Huthwaite has a slightly lower rate of 813.5 per 100,000, with 57 new cases recorded in the same period.

Clifton South is the only area in the city with a rate above 800, recording 51 cases in the week ending January 6 and a rate of 845.1 per 100,000 people.

Responding to the news in Ashfield, the figures were described as a "huge cause for concern".

Councillor Tom Hollis, deputy leader of Ashfield District Council, represents Huthwaite and Brierley.

He said: “These latest figures are a huge cause of concern.

"One of the things I have been undertaking during this latest lockdown is contacting as many of the residents I represent as I can.

"What has become increasingly apparent over the past week – is that there has been a significant rise in residents telling me they have tested positive for coronavirus.

"I can only repeat that it is critical to follow new lockdown rules."

Councillor Samantha Deakin represents Sutton Central and New Cross, which covers the Sutton Central and Leamington area.

In this area, cases were recorded as 'suppressed' as recently as December - leading to a "plea" from the Sutton councillor.

She said: “This is a devastating blow, especially as it was only a few weeks ago when positive cases had plummeted due to the hard work and discipline of residents.

"These figures show, however, that with coronavirus we can never be complacent.

"I would make a plea to my neighbours today to repeat the spirit you showed to get the figures down only a few weeks ago.

"It is only by working together as a community and taking collective responsibility that we can make our area safer for everyone."
