Map shows the 200 places that could end up under tier-one lockdown

Hundreds of places across England could end up under lockdown rules with pubs and restaurants closed, according to the latest data.

The Government will next week announce new lockdown rules - expected to focus on a three-tier system.

Those under the lowest tier would face current national restrictions - the rule of six and face masks in public.

Those under the highest tier would see tougher measures including all pubs and restaurants shut down.

Similar rules have come into force across Scotland on Friday and a Government minister said on Friday morning that the hospitality sector is responsible for 30 per cent of coronavirus cases.

Chancellor Rish Sunak will today unveil new support measures for business and employees forced into lockdown.

According to The Mirror, there are more than 200 towns and cities across England most likely at risk of the highest level of the Government's proposed three-tiered system of restrictions.

Shops, offices and schools would remain open, while a decision is yet to be made on hairdressers and leisure facilities.

The latest Public Health England figures show the highest rates of infection and biggest rises are in Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and Exeter.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has warned “the damage to the economy of the North will be deep and lasting” if the Government does not extend the furlough scheme.

Reacting to the news that 465 jobs are set to be lost at Manchester Airport, he tweeted: “The Government’s line is that these jobs are ‘not viable’. I say that they are.

“(Without) an extension to the main furlough scheme, the damage to the economy of the North will be deep and lasting.”
