Map shows scale of coronavirus outbreak across Europe

A map which shows the scale of the coronavirus in Europe has been released.

There are thousands of confirmed cases across the continent, with Italy the worst hit.

The country has 24,747 confirmed cases and is now in complete lockdown.

Spain is the second-worst hit country in Europe, with 7,753 cases.

In the UK there have been 1,391 confirmed cases and Health Secretary Matt Hancock said over-70s could be told to stay at home for up to four months within the "coming weeks".

The death toll in the UK hit 35 on Sunday, following the news a Nailsea father-of-two who died in the BRI over the weekend, following a positive test for coronavirus, was  named locally as Nick Matthews.

At the time of writing, the number of positive cases in Bristol is now said to be five while the number of cases in North Somerset remains zero.

South Gloucestershire  has four confirmed cases of  coronavirus, according to the latest figures published by Public Health England (PHE). There's now two cases in the Bath and North East Somerset area.

Boris Johnson is to address the nation on the coronavirus threat later today (Monday) after an emergency meeting of the Cobra committee.

Officials are expected to consider measures including banning mass gatherings and lengthy household isolation for the elderly.

Businesses are already saying there is a noticeable drop in business, supermarkets are trying to cope with the increase in demand for certain products and home delivery while the NHS are planning on pressing final year student nurses into the workforce.
