Map shows number of each Covid variant in Nottinghamshire

Figures show how many cases of each dominant Covid-19 variant are present in parts of Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas.

More than half of all new coronavirus cases in Nottingham city are now caused by the mutation that first originated in India.

The B.1.617.2 variant is a sub-lineage of the original B.1.617 Indian variant thought to have caused major problems for the Indian population.

The offshoot (B.1.617.2) has recently been designated a "variant of concern" by the Government and up until now, the exact number of cases on a local level was not known.

Data from the Wellcome Sanger Institute in London - which is conducting Covid-19 genome (variant) surveillance - shows the new Indian variant also makes up a significant percentage of cases in Broxtowe (42.1 percent) and Gedling (34.7 percent).

The overall dominant variant for Nottinghamshire is still the B.1.1.7 known as the UK/Kent variant which has reportedly spread to 50 countries.

The figures also show the original two lineage strains 'A' and 'B' where the root of the pandemic lies, with links to Wuhan, China.

There is also B.1.177, known as the Spanish or European variant which surged during summer travel last year.

B.1.351 is the South African variant, identified in at least 20 other countries outside of the UK.

There is also the B.1.525 which originated in Nigeria and has been detected in the UK, as well as the P.1 Brazil variant.

Below is a list showing each part of Nottinghamshire as well as Erewash on the Derbyshire border, and a breakdown showing the proportion of each strain.

In brackets is the total recorded genomes per week, for the two weeks leading up to May 8 - the most recent data.
