Map shows how experts predict Liverpool covid cases will change after Christmas

A coronavirus map shows what experts think will happen to Liverpool's covid cases after Christmas.

Across the UK Covid-19 cases are expected to continue to rise in several major cities in to January.

The latest data from the Imperial College London and predictions from their experts show how hotspots for the virus could change over the coming weeks.

In the map, experts have used a probability scale which moves from light grey through to red depending on how many cases exceeding 100 per 100,000 population are expected on each date.

Mirror Online reported that according to the map, tier 3 hotspots including Leeds will move out of the red zone by December 25, and cases in previous areas of concern like Liverpool and Knowsley will continue to drop.

Over Christmas, much of the South East of England sees a sea of towns and cities in the 80-100% probability range - including all of London - as do Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Swansea.

And while there is some further movement in hotspots by January, including Windsor and Maidenhead easing out of the top, all of the above cities are expected to remain deep in the grips of infection by January 1, at least.

The capital, which was plunged into Tier 3 yesterday, has the highest case rate in the country, at 319.3 per 100,000, according to the latest Government figures.

The city - home to nearly nine million people - has also seen the highest increase in case rates week-on-week.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, Medical Director at Public Health England, said: “A smaller, shorter and local Christmas is safest for you and your loved ones. It is crucial to remember that about one in three people may never experience any symptoms so could pass this virus on unwittingly.

"Remember to keep your distance, wear a face covering in enclosed spaces, and wash your hands regularly.”

The Imperial College London map does, however, show Tier 3 hotspots, including Leeds, will move out of the red zone by December 25, and cases in previous areas of concern like Liverpool and Knowsley will continue to drop.

Despite the concern, the government has opted to plough ahead with controversial Christmas bubbles, which will see three households allowed to mix indoors for five days from December 23.

Making a statement in the Commons, Matt Hancock said the country has "come so far" and "mustn’t blow it now", after PM Boris Johnson held festive truce crunch talks on Wednesday.

He said: "As we enter the coldest months we must be vigilant and keep this virus under control."

Yesterday, 25,161 more cases were reported, with 18,038 people in hospital due to the virus.

An extra 612 deaths took the overall toll past the 65,000 mark.
