Map shows Edinburgh's ‘toxic’ Giant Hogweed hotspots

There are multiple areas in Edinburgh where 'dangerous' Giant Hogweeds are growing that capital locals should watch out for.

A map by WhatShed shows all of the Giant Hogweed ‘hotspots’ in Edinburgh where you could come into contact with ‘Britain’s most dangerous plant.’

The Giant Hogweed gets its unfortunate nickname from its dangerous sap which can cause burns, ulcers and in some cases blindness.

Last year the Water of Leith Conservation Trust warned that Giant Hogweed "is a public health risk” that could become an "unmanageable problem in 2021."And now a year on and Giant Hogweed hotspots are just as prominent as ever before.

The maps shows where the dangerous plant grows in Edinburgh (WhatShed)

Due to warmer weather in the capital, the toxic plant has been thriving and according to the WhatShed interactive Giant Hogweed map - which tracks sightings of the dangerous plant around the UK - Edinburgh has multiple areas where the plant is growing in a cluster.

Some of the Edinburgh areas to watch out for the plant are Seafield Road, Warriston and Ferry Road allotments, Cameron Toll and Blackford Glen Road.

If the sap comes into contact with your skin, wash immediately with cold water and keep the affected area covered and out of the sun for 48 hours. If you have a reaction or the sap gets into your eyes, seek immediate medical help.

To report invasive non-native species on Edinburgh city council owned land, call 0131 608 1100 or email parks@edinburgh.gov.uk.

You can check out the map for yourself here and add any sightings that have been missed.
