Map shows areas where Giant Hogweed is growing in parts of Nottinghamshire

The 'most dangerous plant' in Britain which can cause blistering and scars is growing in parts of Nottinghamshire, a new interactive map has shown.

Giant Hogweed can be found growing in hedgerows and verges during the early autumn - and it can grow to more than three metres tall.

Now, an interactive map on WhatShed.co.uk has confirmed that Chilwell and Broxtowe are hotspots for the weed in Nottinghamshire.

If giant hogweed is found and you plan on removing it, it is best to be aware of the risks that it posses before you do.

When the plant is cut away it can release a white sap which, if it comes into contact with human skin, can cause pigmentation, blistering and even scars.

The dangerous chemical compounds seep into skin cells, preventing the skin from being able to fully protect itself from sunlight, leading to severe skin damage.

While Nottinghamshire is affected by giant hogweed issues, it is a danger throughout the UK, with places further north like Sheffield and Bradford badly affected.

If the sap comes into contact with your skin, it is advised that you wash immediately with cold water and keep the affected area covered and out of the sun for 48 hours.

The plant is sometimes confused with native Hogweed, but the Giant version was introduced to the UK in the 19th century and can be instantly recognised by its large flower heads, which can grow 2ft across.

You must seek medical help if you have a reaction or the sap gets into your eyes.
