Map of Africa, Map of Africa

The mysterious name perhaps suggests a group of nyabinghi drummers but Map of Africa are instead Harvey Bassett and Thomas Bullock, resident now of upstate New York but hailing originally from East Anglia. Little wonder that their debut, on the hip Whatever We Want, sounds like the work of two musical voyagers who have travelled far by way of funk, dub and backwoods rock and ended up sweaty and hairy, howling at the moon. It's a potent brew, sweetened by the birds of paradise heard chirping improbably on the instrumental 'Ely Cathedral'.
