Map diarrhoea-prone areas, DC tells SDM

MOHALI: Repeated occurrences of diarrhoea have prompted deputy commissioner Isha Kalia to order Derabassi sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to conduct mapping of areas prone to the water-borne disease to find the source of outbreaks and use drones, if required, to detect illegal water connections.

The SDM has also been asked to prepare a report on the mapping to pinpoint the areas of suspected contamination that will be plugged.

Kalia said, “Once the mapping is done, we will provide proper drinking water facility to people before uprooting illegal connections. Red-marked spots will depict diarrhoea-prone areas and enable teams to conduct constant checks. Drinking water is an essential commodity which has to be provided at any cost. Later, we will fix responsibility of the officers who were negligent in detecting illegal connections.”

On the other hand, as many as 70% to 80% of the water samples taken from the affected areas in Derabassi and Zirakpur have been found not fit for drinking.
