Many of Beijing’s Imported Covid-19 Cases are Returning Chinese Students

What’s new: Fifty-one of the 97 imported cases of coronavirus recorded in Beijing as of Saturday were international students returning from overseas, according to the Beijing Municipal Health Commission.

The city added 10 imported cases to its count Monday bringing the sum to 107, but did not say whether any of those were students.

Beijing has reported no locally contracted coronavirus infections in the past 16 days.

Background: Worsening coronavirus conditions in Europe and the U.S. have forced many universities and schools to close, driving Chinese students to try to return home.

Some returnees have also cited fears about testing availability in the U.S.

Official data suggest China has mostly controlled the domestic spread of Covid-19, but the country is now grappling with how to prevent those who contracted the virus overseas from seeding new infections on their return.

It has implemented strict screening and quarantine for returnees.
