A Knowsley manufacturing plant employing 110 people has announced it is planning to close its operation after 25 years in the borough.
Terumo Europa NV, a global medical technology company, which has a manufacturing plant at Knowsley Business Park in Prescot, has had a presence in the borough for the past 25 years.
It currently employs 110 staff producing tubing packs used in cardiac surgery but says that due to “competitive market challenges” it has now made a decision to close the plant.

Terumo says the closure plans are subject to consultation with union officials and employee representatives and that the company will “seek to avoid any compulsory redundancies.”
A spokesperson for Terumo Europe NV said: “It is with sadness that we launch a consultation on the proposed closure of our Merseyside site, which has been key to Terumo’s business for 25 years.
“Our proposal to close the Merseyside plant does not reflect on the performance, dedication, and hard work of our employees working there and is a result of global market challenges.”
The company said the planned closure is with the aim of reducing manufacturing costs, improving competitiveness while increasing “sustainable investment in the business through greater returns.”
The site’s closure is expected to take place at the end of 2023.
