Manuel Pellegrini appointed new Real Betis coach seven months after West Ham exit

Former West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini has been appointed as Real Betis boss, a role he will begin at the start of next season.

The Chilean was sacked by the Hammers in December after a run of nine defeats in 12 matches left the club 17th in the Premier League.

Pellegrini, who was initially hailed as the man to take West Ham to the next level in 2018, was appointed in east London following David Moyes's first spell at the club, before they called on the Scot again to replace the former Manchester City coach and keep them in the top-flight.

Betis have handed the 66-year-old, who spent two years in China before his return to the Premier League, a three-year contract.

They represent Pellegrini's fourth La Liga club after previous spells in charge at Villarreal, Real Madrid and Malaga.

With four games left to play in the 2019-20 LaLiga campaign, Betis currently sit 13th and 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

Sporting coordinator Alexis Trujillo has been in temporary charge of the club since Joan Francesc "Rubi" Ferrer was sacked in June.
