Manu Tuilagi recalled to England squad for training camp as Danny Care misses out

Manu Tuilagi has been recalled to England’s squad after recovering from his knee operation.

Tuilagi returned to action for Sale against Northampton on Sunday but has made just six international appearances since the 2019 Rugby World Cup because of a series of injuries.

Eddie Jones, however, has recalled the centre, who made just eight Premiership appearances last season, to his 36-man squad for a three-day training camp this weekend.

Sam Simmonds is also back in the squad following injury while there are returns to the England set-up for Ben Youngs, Alex Mitchell, Tom Pearson and David Ribbans.

There are first call-ups for Alex Coles, of Northampton Saints, and Saracens’ Hugh Tizard but there is no place for the likes of Danny Care, Henry Slade, Kyle Sinckler, Joe Launchbury or Joe Marchant.

Care was replaced in the first half of the Sydney decider in the July tour of Australia because of an error-strewn display.

England begin their autumn internationals on November 6 against Argentina and also face Japan, New Zealand and South Africa.

But they are currently without a number of high-profile players in their squad through injury. Those include Maro Itoje, George Ford, Courtney Lawes, Sam Underhill, Alex Dombrant and Anthony Watson.

Following his latest squad selection, Jones said: “With a year to go to the Rugby World Cup, this is a big opportunity for players to come in and impress. We want them to show real energy and enthusiasm and that they want to be a part of this massive year.

“It doesn’t mean that those who have been left out won’t be considered for the autumn nations series matches. We’ll be looking at club games, form and fitness, and the door is left open for those players.”
