An inquest has been opened into the death of a young footballer who lost his life aged 20.

Matthew Langton had spells with the academies of Mansfield Town, Derby County and Long Eaton United football club.

He was born on September 20, 2000 and sadly died on March 2, 2021, aged 20.

Ms Laurinda Bower, assistant coroner for Nottinghamshire, opened the inquest into his death on the morning on Wednesday May 5 at Nottingham Council House.

The court heard Matthew was declared dead at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. He was identified by his mother.

A postmortem examination has been conducted and the provisional cause of death was given as "1A head injuries".

As a result of the cause of death, an inquest is necessary.

The hearing now stands adjourned for the completion of further enquiries and will be resumed for a final hearing on a date to be fixed.

Ms Bower added: "I express my sincere condolences to Mr Langton's family, all of his friends and all who knew him."

All three clubs paid tribute to the young footballer across social media.
