Mansfield teacher's 'Coronasaurus Rex' book helping children across the world deal with pandemic

A primary school teacher from Mansfield has released a coronavirus-themed story book for her pupils which portrays the virus as a tyrannosaurus-rex.

Jade Millington, 31, has launched the book 'The Coronasaurus Rex' to help her Holly Primary School pupils understand the world around them.

Miss Millington, who is five months pregnant, has been isolating at home since the start of the lockdown, and started to worry about the "misconceptions" her youngsters must think about the pandemic.

So she teamed up with her friend Gary Armstrong, a graphic designer, to create the book - releasing it on to her social media channels and sharing it with parents at her Forest Town school.

The story focuses on a young boy named Billy who thinks the virus is a dinosaur, with Billy discussing what 'Coronasaurus' is getting up to.

Luckily Billy's mum is there to explain what coronavirus is - and Miss Millington hopes the book will get parents and children talking about the ongoing pandemic.

"I was sat at home thinking about some of my little ones and how they would be reacting to all of this", she told Nottinghamshire Live.

"I thought about the misconceptions they must be thinking about, and I suddenly thought about a little boy thinking about a dinosaur roaming the streets.

"That's where the name 'Coronasaurus Rex' came from.

"I wanted to teach them that coronavirus is not this big thing, it's not a dinosaur or a monster and that it's a little thing they can have control over."

The teacher says she wanted to make the book widely available to her pupils, so she uploaded a link to her Instagram page.

It has since been shared far and wide on the social media platform, leading to Miss Millington reading the book on YouTube and reaching people across the world.

"I didn't expect it to become so popular", she added.

"I've had people reaching out from as far away as Australia and New Zealand to say how helpful the book has been for their children.

"I wish I could go into school to help, as the school is still open supporting key workers' children.

"But it is nice to know it is helping my little ones and others to understand what is going on around them."

While still in lockdown, she says she is working on a few schemes for the children involving the book - including drawing for the younger pupils and some quiz questions for older children.

Duncan White, head teacher at Holly Primary, has praised Miss Millington's book.

"The book is a wonderful way to explain to the children what is happening in the world right now", he said.

"She is also developing activity sheets and a scheme of work to support teachers and parents.

"The Coronasaurus Rex book will hopefully help keep families safe and everyone smiling."
