Mansfield's Richard Bacon to co-host Good Morning Britain and may take place of Piers Morgan

Mansfield's Richard Bacon will be guest presenting ITV's Good Morning Britain and may even take the place of Piers Morgan.

Mr Bacon, 45, who was taught at the Ranby House boarding school in Retford in his younger years, is the latest star to be lined up to take the place of Piers Morgan following his explosive exit recently.

Born in Mansfield, the presenter is widely-known for his work with Blue Peter, BBC Radio Nottingham and BBC Five Live, and his presenting knowledge extends further having also hosted Channel 4's The Big Breakfast from 1999 to 2002.

While he spent some time living and working in Los Angeles at Fox TV his mother, Christine Bacon, still lives in Mansfield.

He is due to host alongside Charlotte Hawkins next Wednesday, Kate Garraway on the Thursday and Friday, and finally Ranvir Singh on Monday, August 23, according to The Mirror.

Richard, who hosted Channel 4 show The Big Breakfast from 1999 to 2002, said: “Not only am I coming home to London to guest present Good Morning Britain this month, but being back on British breakfast broadcasting feels like coming home also.”

Richard said: “I can’t wait to see the team again and am very much looking forward to my time on the show with Kate, Ranvir and Charlotte.”

GMB is flying in the ratings with viewing figures peaking last month at 1.2 million, 20% up on the same day last year.

Its editor Neil Thompson said: “Our mix of guest hosts alongside our brilliant family of presenters has been a great success over recent months.

"We’re delighted Richard can return to join us this summer.”

Bill Turnbull, Richard Madeley and former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell have also filled in for Piers, 56, since he left the show after failing to apologise for comments about Meghan Markle.

It is not known who will take the role permanently.

A source said: “ITV are using these guest presenter slots to decide what works and what doesn’t. Bacon is an exciting prospect.”
