Mansfield residents explain their favourite things about town

Amazing transport links, a breadth of history and tourism, and a host of stately homes "right on our doorstep" - these are just some of the things Mansfield residents love most about our town.

From our links with Robin Hood to the fact that Hardwick Hall, Clumber Park and Rufford Park are just a stone's throw away, Mansfield has a lot to shout about.

And with our industrial, mining, literary and brewing heritage to boot, Mansfield is a nationally-renowned town with more than 100,000 very proud residents.

So when Mansfield Live asked shoppers and traders what their favourite things about the town are, they boasted about all of the above and so much more.

Steve Wright, 54, who is an events security guard, says the best thing about Mansfield is the "beautiful scenery" and the historic buildings.

He said: "My other half is from the North West, and when she came to live here she said 'why didn't you tell me Nottinghamshire is so beautiful?'

"You don't realise it when you're around it every day, but she is right. If you're in the market and you look above the shop fronts, it's like walking into a time machine.

"Mansfield is full of history, and the buildings are so, so beautiful."

Craig Kerry, 50, who works at Mansfield Computer Store in Church Street, says the town's close proximity to "amazing destinations" is one of his favourite things about Mansfield.

He said: "We've got Hardwick Hall, the Palace Theatre, Sherwood Forest, Rufford Park, Clumber Park and Newstead Abbey all on our doorstep, and I think we take this for granted.

"Outside of the town centre there's loads to do, as soon as you leave the ring road you're in the countryside. It's a very well-connected town and we don't appreciate this enough."

Andrew Evans, 37, who was shopping in Birds Bakery in West Gate, says the town has a lot to shout about - and agrees about Mansfield being well-connected.

He said: "Mansfield is close to everything. We've got the M1 and the A1 running right past us so we have good access to each part of the country.

"We have a £350 million hospital, loads of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. There's a lot of worse places in the country to live."

Denisa Davies, 73, who is retired, has lived in Mansfield for nearly 50 years and says it's an "amazing place" to live in.

She said: "There's a lot of things to shout about. We have got some nice shops, the market was better years ago but it's still really good - and better than other places.

"I have lived here for almost 50 years and I think it's an amazing place. The people are so friendly, I'm slightly visually impaired and there will always be people to help me, and it's really easy for me to get around."

Ben Bradley, Mansfield's MP, also thinks the town has got "so much potential".

He added: "We're perfectly located in the heart of Sherwood Forest and surrounded by great visitor attractions, loads of small businesses doing really innovative things, and now a once in a lifetime chance to invest £25m in our town centre so we can make the most of the beautiful listed buildings and heritage."

Andy Abrahams, Mansfield's mayor, added: “I’m proud to serve my hometown as Mayor and the thing that I like most about Mansfield is the people.

“Mansfield residents are generous, kindhearted and caring – I see this every day in the volunteer groups that I visit and the people I meet – there’s a real sense of community and this is important to our town.

“Mansfield’s young people love their sport and with the dedication of their coaches in the community have produced numerous world champions.

"I also like that Mansfield has plenty of open spaces and access to the outdoors, which is great for the mental and physical health of our residents.”
