Mansfield group sent home after travelling miles to Matlock for 'fish and chips'

Residents from Mansfield were told to find somewhere "more local" after travelling almost 20 miles for some chip shop food in Derbyshire.

Officers from the Matlock, Cromford, Wirksworth and Darley Dale police force posted about the incident on Facebook, revealing the residents travelled from Mansfield for some fish and chips this weekend.

It came as sunny weather hit swathes of the country, causing people to gather in Nottinghamshire beauty spots including the Arboretum.

Posting about the incident on social media, the Derbyshire force said the journey taken by the Mansfield residents was "not reasonable travel".

They sent them back to Mansfield and urged them to find a chippy more local to the town.

A spokesperson said: "Ibiza coming for fish and chips with friends from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. This is not reasonable travel.

"Sent back home and advised to find a chippy somewhere more local."

It is not the first time officers in Derbyshire have made headlines for sending people on their way after unnecessary lockdown journeys.

Three men who live more than 100 miles apart were fined by the force for meeting at a McDonald's in Chesterfield in January.

Other incidents have included sending people from Manchester away from the Peak District and utilising drones to catch people on lockdown walks.

Government guidance on the issue states: "If you do leave home for a permitted reason, you should always stay in your local area - unless it is necessary to go further, for example to go to work.

"Staying in your local area means stay in the village, town, or part of the city where you live."

One "permitted reason" for leaving the house during lockdown is for exercise, either with your household or bubble".

However, guidance does state that people must not travel for exercise "outside your local area".
