Back in 2001, a referendum took place after more than five percent of the Mansfield electorate signed a petition asking for a council leadership which consisted of a mayor and a cabinet.
This came into place in 2002 and gives the executive mayor political leadership over the council and the community.
The current mayor is Kate Allsop, who is also a candidate for the Mansfield Independent Forum, and her four-year term is coming to an end after being elected in 2015.
There are five candidates standing in the mayoral election, these are as follows:
Andy Abrahams - Labour Party
Kate Allsop - Mansfield Independent Forum
Steve Garner - Independent
George Jabbour - The Conservative Party
Philip Shields - Independent
