Mansfield couple armed themselves with weapons when 'targeted' by group at home

A barechested and shoeless resident armed himself with an axe and his partner had a hammer during a disturbance in a Nottinghamshire street.

Gavin Pearson and Charlene Kerr were seen on CCTV during the fracas in Mansfield.

A third man, Sean Stewart, 30, of Noel Street, Mansfield, was one of three cyclists caught on camera.

He was pursued by Pearson who had in his hand the axe.

Pearson was followed by his partner, Kerr, who was carrying the hammer in her hand.

She went to Newcastle Street, Mansfield, after 4am on June 4 this year and onto Rosemary Street, Mansfield, where she passed a service station, before doubling back and passing the top of Newcastle Street, the court was told.

"A large group had gathered," said Matthew Rowcliffe, prosecuting.

He said Stewart, who has pleaded guilty to having an axe and is awaiting sentencing, was seen to swing an implement towards Pearson and Kerr.

Stewart threw an axe onto the roof of a nearby property.

After the defendants were arrested and interviewed, Kerr stated that males and females entered her address. She was identified in the street by CCTV but said she did not know what she was carrying. Pearson had said they were at home when five people came to the address.

Katrina Wilson, for Pearson, said: "Trouble came to his door. He was shirtless and shoeless during the incident. He lived on a street adjacent to Newcastle Street.

"The address is shared accommodation. He has one room, there are others".

The address was previously linked to drug use and possibly drug dealing,

When Pearson moved in, a stance was taken by him, as he had been out of trouble since 2015, and he did not want drug dealers or users at the door. This led to a dislike of him by others, said Miss Wilson.

"One month or so ago there was an allegation of aggravated burglary, where the complainant was Mr Pearson, at the same address and it has not led to charges".

She said of the street disturbance, it "is not a scenario he (Pearson) set out looking for trouble or went out armed looking for violence".

Both defendants, who are 42 years old and from Welbeck Street, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to affray and having an offensive weapon, and both were given ten months in prison, suspended for 21 months, 15 days each on a rehabilitation requirement and a "thinking skills programme".

Judge James Sampson told the pair in the dock: "At 4.30am most law-abiding individuals are at home asleep in bed or on their way to work or at work. For some reason your home was targeted by a group of individuals. I suspect that drugs and money have something to do with it.

"I'm prepared to accept, on this occasion, you were not seeking trouble, as Miss Wilson has observed, it came to your door. You reacted. You reacted in entirely the wrong way".
