Mansfield 4 Rangers 2 as Greg Stewart nets but Ibrox development side come up short

Rangers' development side suffered a 4-2 defeat to Mansfield on Saturday.

Greg Stewart strengthened his case for an enhanced role after netting during the friendly as Jake Hastie , Jamie Murphy and Andy Firth were all handed starts.

Graeme Murty named a strong starting XI that mixed the stars of tomorrow with a host of senior players in need of game time.

Graham Dorrans was also included in the line-up despite being surplus to requirements at Ibrox.

Rangers had to dig deep after twice going behind but had no answer after a late onslaught from the League Two side.

Andy Cook fired the hosts into the lead after a deft touch from Malvind Benning who set up his team-mate.

But Rangers reacted quickly and were on level terms before the break as Jordan Houston tucked home from the edge of the box.

The visitors dominated the action but found themselves behind again as former Chelsea kid Jacob Mellis netted a stunner as he fired a curling free-kick into the top corner.

Rangers responded as Stewart made it 2-2 after his deflected effort looped into the net but a quick-fire double from Danny Rose and Otis Khan sealed the win for the hosts.

It was a far cry to the 2-0 win Rangers enjoyed against the same opponents during their warm-weather training camp in the Algarve.

Stags chairman John Radford revealed last month his side could get the chance to sign some Ibrox stars after speaking with Steven Gerrard .

He said: “We had a good chat afterwards - you never know.

“There are always opportunities for a club like ours to get a little bit of help from clubs higher up the football pyramid.

“We are all part of the football family and Steven Gerrard has named a few of his players he'd like us to have a look at, so we are looking.

“I have watched Rangers train all week and I will tell you now, Steven Gerrard is fantastic - with the professionalism and effort he puts into his players."
