Manny Perez leaves Celtic as forgotten Stateside signing follows Andrew Gutman in MLS move

Forgotten Celtic man Manny Perez has signed for MLS side Austin FC, via Portland Timbers, in a confusing cross-Atlantic deal.

The 22-year-old signed for the Parkhead club alongside left-back Andrew Gutman in January 2019.

At the time both players signed three-and-a-half year contracts and were loaned back Stateside with a view to returning to Glasgow down the line.

But both players have struggled to obtain work permits despite being desperate to made their debut in Glasgow's east end, with Perez even following the Scottish Premiership season through a Celtic TV login.

Gutman left Celtic permanently last month to sign for Atlanta United, before being loaned out to New York Red Bulls where he'll play with another ex-Hoops player in Patryk Klimala.

And Perez has followed him out of the club, with both players not making one competitive appearance in Scotland.

Portland Timbers announced his signing on an initial one-year deal on Monday evening - but have immediately sent him on loan to Austin for the 2021 MLS season, in exchange for a third-round pick in the league's draft in two years time.

Austin have an option to buy Perez at the end of the campaign. He signed for USL side North Carolina FC on loan last season and made 37 appearances.
