Manny Pacquiao has revealed that a rematch against Floyd Mayweather next year is a “big possibility”.
The six-division world champion was addressing the Oxford Union when he stoked speculation of a repeat of his and Mayweather’s 2015 Las Vegas money-spinner.
The Filipino senator, who turns 40 in December, stated that he would like to have two more fights before retiring. The first of those is set to come in January when Pacquiao will return to America to take on Mayweather’s highly-controversial former protege Adrien Broner.
"There is a big possibility because Floyd is coming back into boxing," Pacquiao said.
"He is fighting in December and I am fighting in January. So a big possibility after that next year that we will discuss a re-match.
"My thinking is to have a re-match and to make a clear decision on who will win the fight because in the last fight that we had it wasn't clear who won the fight because he didn't throw a lot of punches and he won the fight.
"I had a shoulder injury...but this time, if this re-match happens there are no excuses, no alibis."
Mayweather announced on Monday that he will come out of retirement, yet again, to face kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan on New Year’s Eve after moving to an undefeated 50-0 record with his lucrative win against Conor McGregor in August.
Pacquiao has fought four times since losing to Mayweather, defeating Timothy Bradley Jr. in a trilogy fight before winning another world title in the welterweight division against Jessie Vargas in May 2016.
However, the Filipino then suffered a surprise defeat in Brisbane, Australia to local hero Jeff Horn before a knockout comeback against Argentinian Lucas Matthyse last July - Pacquiao's first knockout win for nine years.
Mayweather and Pacquiao’s first bout generated $500 and was the most profitable pay-per-view event in history until that record was superseded by his win against McGregor this year.
