Manipur: SDPO killed, 2 cops injured in ambush near Indo-Myanmar border

GUWAHATI: Hours after the Manipur cabinet declared that sub-divisional police officer Chingtham Anand Kumar was shot dead by Kuki militants at Tengnoupal district’s Moreh town, which is along the Indo-Myanmar border, two other Manipur Police personnel received serious injuries as militants attacked a reinforcement convoy moving towards Moreh in the afternoon.

A security source said that the convoy was ambushed at Sinam village in Tengnoupal district and about 49 km from Moreh at around 3 pm.

Earlier in the day, an emergency cabinet meeting was held at Imphal after the killing of the SDPO by a suspected sniper when he was on duty inspecting a newly constructed helipad in the town. He was shot in the abdomen.

A government statement said that the cabinet has noted that Kumar, a resident of Haobam Marak Chingtham Leikai in Imphal was killed in "unprovoked firing by armed Kuki militants."

The cabinet approved an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh as compensation for the death of Kumar "considering the special duty in a special area." The cabinet also approved to provide a suitable government employment to the next-of-kin of the deceased police officer.

The cabinet also directed for launching a joint operation in Moreh and adjoining areas to nab the culprits responsible for the crime, and to continue the same till the culprits are arrested. The Cabinet also noted that additional State forces have been detailed from Imphal for the purpose
