Manipur offers additional SP post to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu

IMPHAL: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Monday announced that the state government has decided to appoint Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu as additional superintendent of police (sports) in the police department.

The 26-year-old Khel Ratna awardee on Saturday won the medal in the 49kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo Olympics. She is currently working in the Indian Railways.

During the inspection of on-going installation of Cryogenic Oxygen Plant at Porompat and construction of Covid hospital by the DRDO at Kyamgei here, Biren Singh told reporters that Chanu would also be rewarded with Rs 1 crore as his government had announced recently.

The chief minister said Olympian judoka Likmabam Sushila Devi would be promoted from the post of constable to sub-inspector.

Maintaining that all five athletes of the state who take part in the Tokyo Olympics would be given Rs 25 lakh each, the CM also announced that the his government had decided to establish a world-class weightlifting academy in the state soon.

Most the state athletes who won laurels in the national and international championships are given suitable and prominent posts in the state police department over the years.
