Manipur man convicted of sexual assault on minor

IMPHAL: A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Churachandpur district on Tuesday convicted a 41-year-old man, T Guite, of sexually assaulting a minor girl in the district in 2016.

According to the case dossiers, a case was registered against Guite on October 15, 2016 following a complaint lodged at the woman police station of Churachandpur.

The police, after completing the investigation, had submitted a chargesheet, under different sections of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act, against the accused before the court, following which the trial began. Statements of 11 prosecution witnesses, including the minor victim, were recorded in the court during the trial, the dossiers added.

After hearing the special public prosecutor and defence counsel, the court convicted Guite under Section 4 of the POCSO Act, 2012. The next hearing will be held on Thursday when the court will announce the quantum of punishment.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
