Maniac trailer: Emma Stone and Jonah Hill lead new Netflix series from True Detective director

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for a brand new series from the director of True Detective's first season that'll reunite Jonah Hill and Emma Stone.

Maniac, a black comedy based on a Norwegian series from 2014, sees the Superbad duo playing strangers brought together after agreeing to trial a mysterious drug treatment thought to cure any mental illness or heartbreak, but one that leaves some surprising side effects in its wake.

Cary Joji Fukunaga, who directed all eight episodes of the acclaimed debut season of HBO anthology True Detective, has overseen this brand new project that will also star Oscar-winner Sally Field (Forrest Gump), Julia Garner (The Americans) and Justin Theroux who plays Dr Mantleray.

The 10-episode series has been created by novelist Patrick Somerville whose TV credits include episodes for HBO's seminal drama The Leftovers, which starred Theroux in the lead role alongside Ann Dowd and Carrie Coon.

The limited series will be released by the streaming service on 21 September.
