Maniac stabbed Glasgow stranger 27 times in one minute - but victim miraculously survived

A thug stabbed a stranger 27 times in a minute during a brutal and unprovoked murder bid.

William Leiper, 23, had attended a funeral hours before turning on Alisdair Clements, 43, in October. The architect suffered horrific injuries to his liver, colon and spleen and had to spend nearly two months in hospital.

Leiper faces a lengthy jail term after he pled guilty to an attempted murder charge.

The High Court in Glasgow heard yesterday that the accused and his 25-year-old brother, Robert, had been at a funeral on October 5 last year.

Alisdair was attacked after he left the Old Toll Bar in the city’s Kinning Park with two friends at midnight.

Leiper, who was walking nearby, yelled at the men, who ignored him.

The court heard Leiper was then spotted picking up a knife that he had dropped. He was joined by his brother, who suddenly punched Alisdair.

Prosecutor Barry Smith said Leiper then turned on the victim, who was kicked and flung to the ground, before being “repeatedly struck on the body with the knife”.

The horror attack only ended when Alisdair’s friends bravely stepped in.

The brothers fled the scene but a blood trial led police to their home in nearby Govan Road. Leiper was spotted with a knife and officers used a stun grenade to control the situation.

The court heard Alisdair needed emergency surgery and a second operation when he suffered “multi-organ dysfunction” eight days later.

Robert Leiper pled guilty to a reduced charge of assault.

Lady Scott deferred sentencing until June 26.
