Manhunt underway after knife-wielding carjackers plough into pedestrian in Coventry

Rex Features

Police are searching for two men who killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run in Coventry with a car they had stolen at knife-point minutes before.

The 38-year-old victim had been walking along a pavement in the suburb of Earlsdon, when he was hit by a black Chevrolet SUV in the early hours of the morning, West Midlands Police said.

He was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.

Two men were spotted fleeing the scene, leaving a large knife in the car's footwell.

The vehicle's owner also suffered minor injuries when he was assaulted by the carjackers minutes before.

The car has been taken for forensic examination, West Midlands Police said.

The force’s Detective Sergeant Alan Hands said: "This is a deeply tragic set of circumstances where the theft of a car has led to the death of an innocent man who was simply making his way home.

"We are trawling through CCTV of the area to track the movements of the vehicle and where the two suspects may have escaped to.

"I would ask anyone with information to help us identify them to contact us as soon as possible on 101."
