Manhunt underway after fatal methadone clinic stabbing

Police closed a busy street in Wollongong following a stabbing outside a methadone clinic on Friday morning.

Police are searching for a man over a fatal stabbing outside a methadone clinic in central Wollongong, south of Sydney, this morning.

Investigators say a 39-year-old man was on his way to visit the clinic in Denison Street when a fight occurred at 6am today, resulting in him being stabbed in the chest.

The man, who was from the suburb of Bulli, was taken to Wollongong Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Acting Superintendent Chad Gillies from Wollongong Police District said police do not believe is was a random attack, and that they want to speak with a man who they believe is a person of interest.

"There is a male that is apparently known to the deceased … that was allegedly involved in that altercation," Acting Supt Gillies said.

"We're currently in the position of trying to locate that individual.

"My message to that individual is to hand themselves into the local police station."

'Something had to happen'

One man, who did not want to be identified, told the ABC the area near the Wollongong train station is well known for anti-social behaviour.

"It's shocking someone has died, but as other people have said, eventually something had to happen there," the man said.

"I guess its not the first time someone has been in a fight around the clinic."

The clinic is in the centre of a busy medical district, with some patients travelling long distances for early-morning treatment.

Some have had their appointments cancelled, while those with urgent medical needs have been referred to another clinic nearby.

Several of those awaiting treatment at the alternative treatment today the ABC they knew the victim well, and were saddened by his loss.

Police are speaking with witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage in the area, and are urging anyone who was in the vicinity of Denison Street at 6am to contact Crime Stoppers.
