Pair charged with abduction, rape of Melbourne woman

Another man has been charged with the abduction and rape of a woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted after a night out in Melbourne.

Police on Thursday said the woman, aged in her 30s, had caught a taxi with a friend from a nightclub in the city to the corner of Lygon and Grattan streets in Carlton about 4:30am on Sunday June 17.

Investigators said they believed the woman was picked up by a vehicle after she became separated from her friend, and was later sexually assaulted.

After a public appeal for witnesses to come forward, a 23-year-old man from Doreen, in the city's north, presented himself at Mernda police station.

He has since been charged with abduction, two counts of rape, unlawful imprisonment and theft.

A 26-year-old man has also presented himself to the police complex at Spencer Street and has been charged with abduction, two counts of rape and unlawful imprisonment and theft.

Investigators had released images of three men who were captured in CCTV footage in the Grattan St area at the time, and who police believed were witnesses.

They attended Epping police station and spoke with investigators, police said.

The alleged assault took place just days after a 19-year-old man was charged with the rape and murder of Eurydice Dixon, whose body was found at Princes Park, not far from Lygon St.
