Manhunt under way after teenager slashed with blade and sprayed with unknown substance in Byker park

A teenager who was slashed by a blade and sprayed in the eyes was taken to hospital after being assaulted in a Newcastle park.

Police officers were called to Harbottle Park in Byker just after 7pm on Sunday after a teenager was left injured in the attack.

The 17-year-old boy received a slash to his hand and sore eyes after being sprayed with a liquid.

There is not believed to be any wider risk to the public and Northumbria Police are carrying out a search for a known suspect.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 7.10pm on Sunday police received a report that a 17-year-old man had been assaulted in Harbottle Park.

"Emergency services attended and he was treated for a slash to his hand and soreness in his eyes after being sprayed with an unknown liquid.

"The injuries are not believed to be serious and he has since been discharged from hospital.

"An investigation into the incident is ongoing and it is believed that all of those involved are known to each other.

"Inquiries to trace a named suspect are ongoing this afternoon and anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 795 05/01/20."
