Police in Niagara Falls, New York are searching for a suspect after a bloodhound led them to a basement where they found a woman chained up after a 12-hour standoff.

The discovery of the woman followed after police in the upstate New York town received a call on Sunday morning about an assault, leading them to discover a broken window and blood at a home that appeared to be empty.

After a further investigation and repeated attempts by the family to get in contact with the woman, police then returned to the home with the bloodhound.

That dog then led them to a nearby home, prompting the 12-hour standoff that only ended once police realised that the suspect was not inside.

The woman, who has not been identified by police, has been taken to a nearby hospital.

Police say that they are searching for a man named Michael Ciskiewic, who they believe was involved in chaining up the woman, according to the Niagara Gazette.

Detective captain Kelly Rizzo told that newspaper that the woman was doing well on Monday after being taken to the hospital.
