Manhunt for killer who 'escaped' open prison and was last seen near bus station

A manhunt has been launched for a convicted killer who absconded from an open prison, say police.

Marcus Coates, who has tattoos of West Ham FC and a woman's name, was jailed for manslaughter in 2012 and was an inmate at the Category D HMP Leyhill in Tortworth, Gloucestershire.

The 54-year-old was last seen near the bus station in Bristol city centre on Thursday night, said Avon and Somerset Police.

The force, which appealed for the public's help in the search for Coates, said he has links to London and Kent, and should not be approached if seen.

Instead, anyone who spots him should call 999 immediately.

Coates has "mousey" brown hair and several tattoos, said police, who shared a photo of him and a CCTV image.

The force said his tattoos include his name and a rose on his name on left hand, a heart and 'West Ham FC' on his right arm and a female’s name across his knuckles on his right hand.

Police said: "We’re asking the public to call us if they see Marcus Coates who absconded from HMP Leyhill.

"He was last seen near Bristol Bus Station between 8.30-9.30am on Thursday 28 October wearing a blue polo shirt, blue jacket, blue jeans and grey Puma trainers, as per the CCTV image.

"Coates has links to London and Kent areas.

"If you see Coates, don’t approach, call 999 and give reference number 5221253377. If you know where he may be, call 101 and use the same reference number."
