Manhunt after fatal stabbing in Tasmania

Police are searching for Kerry Whiting over a suspected murder in northern Tasmania. (AAP)

A manhunt is underway in northern Tasmania after a man was killed and a woman critically injured in a double stabbing.

Police say a man known to the pair broke in to the house in the Launceston suburb of Ravenswood about 3.30am on Thursday.

Two teenagers were at the house when the stabbing occurred but escaped unharmed and are receiving support.

Tasmania Police released an image of Kerry Whiting, who they say may be able to assist with enquiries into the suspected murder.

He is not a threat to the wider community, police say.

Police are also seeking assistance to locate a car of interest, a black Nissan Murano wagon, with the Victorian registration HOOKAH.

The man, aged in his 30s, died at the scene, while the woman, also in her 30s, is being treated at Launceston General hospital.

A helicopter is being used in the search for the man.
