Police are appealing for help after a drowning dog with a large rock tied to it was rescued from a river in Nottinghamshire.

A Belgian shepherd, identified by microchip as Bella, was rescued from the River Trent in Farndon on Monday morning.

A member of the public spotted the dog, who police said was drowning after being attached to a carrier bag containing a rock.

The dog was then taken to the vet for assessment.

According to microchip records, the dog was registered as 'Bella' (@nottspolice)

Police are now appealing for anyone with information about the abandoned dog to come forward.

Nottinghamshire Police officer, PC Pace said: "This was an evil and nasty thing to do to this poor dog and we are making every effort to find out who is responsible. We are lucky that the kind member of the public found and rescued her.

“If anyone has dash-cam or CCTV footage of vehicles in Long Lane that may show who was in the area at the time that would be really helpful.”

The officer added that while the dog was recorded as Bella on her microchip in 2010, her name may have been changed since then.
