‘Manhattanhenge’ causes Times Square to grind to a halt as crowd capture biannual event

Times Square briefly ground to a halt on Thursday (28 May) as locals and tourists stopped to capture the first day of Manhattanhenge.

The event sees views of the setting sun align perfectly with streets in Manhattan, leading to spectacular images.

Footage shows scores of people gathering at West 42nd Street to catch a glimpse of the biannual event, which occurs in late May and mid-July.

The phenomenon is named as a reference to Stonehenge’s alignment with the sun on the summer and winter solstices.
