New York Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday the city is sending two teams to Las Vegas as part of the investigation into the mass shooting at a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening.
They will be executing a search warrant and tracing two firearms recovered at the scene after Vegas resident and casino employee Shane Tamura, 27, stormed the office building at 345 Park Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, “spraying” the lobby with bullets from an AR-15-style rifle.
Tamura took an elevator up to Rudin Management’s 33rd-floor office, where he continued firing rounds, before turning the gun on himself, according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
An NYPD officer, a security guard, a Blackstone executive, and an associate at Rudin have been named as the victims. The NFL said one of its employees was seriously injured.
Mayor Adams said Tuesday that Tamura “appeared to have gone to the wrong floor” and had intended to reach the NFL offices located on the lower levels.
A note left by Tamura blamed playing football for his alleged chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), with a former teammate telling The Independent that he took “some big hits” on the field.

“Our laws only go so far when an AR-15 can be obtained in a state with weak gun laws and brought into New York to commit mass murder,” Hochul said in a statement.

Security arrangements under scrutiny following shooting at high-rise office tower
Tuesday 29 July 2025 15:56 , Oliver O'ConnellThe offices of investment firm Blackstone and KPMG at 345 Park Avenue are closed following last night’s tragedy.
The shooting, which claimed the lives of four victims in addition to the gunman, has raised questions about security protocols in similar high-rise office buildings.
Most financial firms' offices throughout New York have security desks, with many restricting elevator usage to those with security passes; however, lobby access is less restricted. That may change in the aftermath of this incident. Rudin Management, which owns the building, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on possible changes when asked by Reuters.
After opening fire in the lobby, the shooter, Shane Tamura, accessed an elevator that took him to the 33rd floor of the building, where Rudin’s offices are located. He shot another person there before turning the gun on himself.
A Goldman Sachs spokesperson told Reuters that the company has “robust security protocols” throughout its buildings and is “constantly assessing their effectiveness to ensure they reflect best practices, especially based on recent events.”
Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman and President Jon Gray wrote a note to staff on Monday calling the day the “worst day in the firm's 40-year history,” according to sources who saw the memo.
Wesley LePatner, the firm’s global head of Core+ Real Estate and chief executive officer for Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust, was one of the four victims of the gunman.
Later on Tuesday morning, Blackstone will hold a Zoom call, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Shooting occurred in heart of Manhattan's financial sector
Tuesday 29 July 2025 16:25 , Oliver O'ConnellMonday's shooting caused a significant shutdown across Midtown Manhattan, forcing employees at major financial firms, including hedge fund Citadel and investment bank Jefferies Financial Group Inc., into lockdown.
The disruption highlighted Park Avenue's growing prominence as the city’s financial centre, now housing more leading institutions than Wall Street itself.
JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s massive new headquarters at 270 Park Avenue is situated just blocks from 345 Park Avenue, where Blackstone is based.
Third victim identified, report says
Tuesday 29 July 2025 16:35 , Oliver O'ConnellThe third of the gunman’s four victims has been identified, according to The New York Post.
Julie Hyman was killed on the 33rd floor of the office tower, where she worked for Rudin Management as an associate.
She graduated from Cornell in 2020.
The three other victims were all shot in the lobby of the building. They have been identified as NYPD officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, and the third is believed to be a security guard who has not yet been named.
Gunman Shane Tamura’s intended target was the NFL offices in the building, according to Mayor Eric Adams. He took the wrong elevator and ended up in the Rudin offices instead, where he opened fire again before turning the gun on himself.
A statement from the Rudin family, which owns 345 Park Avenue, said that a “cherished Rudin colleague” was among those killed in the shooting on Monday. It did not name the victim.
“The Rudin family and everyone at our company are devastated by yesterday’s senseless tragedy,” the statement said, thanking the police and other emergency responders as well as the mayor.
“The building will remain closed today as the authorities continue their investigations. As New Yorkers, we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this hatred, we grieve with the families and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the full recovery of those injured.”

New York sending two teams to Las Vegas as part of investigation
Tuesday 29 July 2025 17:22 , Oliver O'ConnellNew York Mayor Eric Adams told CNN that the city was sending two teams to Las Vegas as part of the investigation.
They will execute a search warrant and trace the two firearms that were recovered.
He told Wolf Blitzer the city’s medical examiner would decide whether to test the gunman for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the degenerative disease that can definitively be diagnosed only after an autopsy.
“The motive appeared to be connected to the shooter’s belief that he was suffering from CTE and [the claim that] he was an ex-NFL player,” Adams said. “Those items just don’t pan out. He never played for the NFL.”
Asked if the gunman had been on the radar of law enforcement, Adams said: “He was not on our radar at all.”

When asked if he had talked to players or staff about the shooting or if they feared for their safety, Daboll said he had not yet had any conversations in that regard.

Shooting was New York's deadliest in 25 years
Tuesday 29 July 2025 18:31 , Oliver O'ConnellMonday’s shooting that left four people dead, in addition to the gunman, in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper was New York City’s deadliest single shooting in 25 years.
The New York Times reports that the last time a shooting in the five boroughs recorded a higher toll was in 2000.
In that incident, five people were fatally shot and two were injured at a branch of the fast food chain Wendy’s in Flushing, Queens, during a robbery, according to former police officials and published reports.
Tight security and strict gun laws make incidents such as that on Monday evening rare in the city. Mass shootings, particularly those involving a rifle, and not connected to another crime, such as a robbery or drug deal, do not tend to happen.
“I don’t recall a time in the last two decades that we’ve had a stranger mass shooting like this,” James Essig, the former chief of detectives at the New York Police Department, told the Times. “Just doesn’t happen here.”

“I want to extend my profound sympathies to all of the victims and their families, and to the brave NYPD cops who today lost a brother,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference on Monday evening.

Gunman suicide note shows admiration for CTE documentary and list of neuroscientists
Tuesday 29 July 2025 20:06 , Oliver O'ConnellThe suicide note that gunman Shane Tamura left behind included a list of prominent neuroscientists and revealed an admiration for a documentary on CTE.
The New York Post reports that Tamura had scrawled “frontline documentary” on one of the pages — an apparent reference to the League of Denial documentary that examined the links between the NFL and possible brain injuries from head trauma.
The note also made mention of the “Fainaru brothers” — the two ESPN reporters who co-wrote the book on which the documentary is based.
There was also a list of doctors, including Dr. Ann McKee, chief of neuropathology at Boston University’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and Dr. Christopher Nowinski, the co-founder of Boston University’s CTE Center.
Tamura’s note included a plea to study his brain for signs of CTE, the degenerative brain disease linked to concussions and head traumas associated with contact sports.
Speaking in interviews earlier today, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said of Tamura’s motive: “We’re still going through the suicide note to zero in on the exact reason, but at this time it appears as if it’s something attached to his belief he experienced CTE from the NFL.”
Despite Tamura’s suggestion that he suffered from CTE from playing in the NFL, he only played high school football in California.

Shane Tamura, the 27-year-old gunman who fatally shot 36-year-old New York City police officer Didarul Islam and several others in a New York City skyscraper on Monday, was reportedly found dead with a note claiming that football had given him chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
In it, he addressed former Pittsburgh Steelers player Terry Long, who was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease. Long drank a bottle of antifreeze to commit suicide in 2005, with doctors at the time attributing depression associated with the condition as a factor in his death.
“Terry Long, football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,” the note said, according to reports from The New York Post.
“Please study brain for CTE. I’m sorry. The league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits,” he wrote. “They failed us.”

EXCLUSIVE: NFL-targeting killer Shane Tamura took ‘big hits’ to the head on high school football field, former teammate says
Tuesday 29 July 2025 21:10 , Oliver O'ConnellJustin Rohrlich writes:
The NYC mass shooter who blamed the NFL for his apparent CTE brain injury did regularly take “some big hits’ on the field that left him “looking empty,” a former high school teammate told The Independent.
Shane Devon Tamura, 27, sprayed bullets from a M4 assault weapon at a Park Avenue office building Monday evening, killing four people including a cop before turning the gun on himself.
Police found Tamura’s body with a suicide note in his pocket that claimed he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain condition that has been linked to the head trauma regularly endured by those who participate in contact sports, such as football players.
Tobenna Okunna, 28, a onetime defensive end who played with Tamura in high school in Santa Clarita, California, spoke to The Independent.

Tuesday 29 July 2025 21:30 , Oliver O'ConnellShane Tamura played one season of football in high school with the Granada Hills Charter Highlanders, serving as a running back and defensive back during his senior year in the 2015-16 season.
His coach at the time, Walter Roby, spoke with Fox11.
“Shane was very quiet. He was a quiet, hard worker. He was coachable. So whatever we asked him to do, he was doing it. He led by, you know, his actions on the field. He was our, you know, one of my top offensive players at the time,” Roby said.
“Could I have done more? Could I help the kid? Could I have reached out to him or could you reach out to me? It’s just a lot of things I’m trying to process right now.”
He further spoke to The New York Post, adding that he doesn’t recall Tamura suffering any injuries beyond a problem with his ankle, despite the suicide note blaming CTE, a condition caused by head trauma.
“I only remember an ankle. I remember it might have kept him out of one game, but something of that nature. I can’t remember if it was left or right,” Roby told the Post.
“He was definitely that kid who would do whatever you wanted him to do,” he said. “He was quiet, humble. He knew his athletic ability but he wasn’t boastful about that.”

“I don’t think he understands the importance of the NYPD and the importance of public safety,” Cuomo said.
While he refrained from grading Mayor Eric Adams, another contender in the November election, on his handling of the incident, Cuomo did express his intention to retain Jessica Tisch as the city’s police commissioner should he be elected.
He praised her performance, stating: “She’s doing a very good job, and I think there’s been a dramatic turnaround” at the department under her leadership.
