Mangotsfield recycling centre: Fire statement in full after 'significant amount of refuse' bursts into flames

A significant amount of refuse has caught fire at a tip in South Gloucestershire.

South Gloucestershire Council has confirmed that a blaze has broken out at one of the non-recyclable waste areas at the Mangotsfield tip on Carsons Road. The fire service is urging residents to keep their windows and doors shut as there is a large plume of smoke issuing from the fire. People are also being urged to avoid the area if possible.

A fire spokesperson said: "A significant amount of refuse is alight. At this stage, while we are still extinguishing the blaze, we cannot confirm the cause of the fire.

"Fire investigation will take place once it is safe to do so."

A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “Mangotsfield Sort It Centre is currently closed due to a fire that has broken out in the one of the non-recyclable waste areas. Avon Fire and Rescue Service is dealing with the fire and advises residents living near to the site to keep their windows closed until further notice.

“Mangotsfield Sort It centre will remain closed for the time being but our other recycling centres in Yate, Thornbury and Little Stoke are open as normal https://beta.southglos.gov.uk/recycling-centres.”

On its original statement, the fire service said: "Crews from Temple, Kingswood and Hicks Gate were called at 10:50am to reports of a fire on Carsons Road, Mangotsfield.

"On arrival, crews found a significant fire and more fire engines were mobilised to support crews on the scene. As of 12:17, we have 8 fire engines at the incident.

"Firefighters are using high-pressure hose reels to extinguish the blaze. The Service drone has also been flying to support crews in extinguishing the fire.

"We are encouraging local residents to keep their doors and windows closed as there is a large plume of smoke issuing from the fire. We also continue to encourage people to avoid the area where possible."
