Mango fight fruitful, redheads light up as Unicode raises thumb for emojis

A year and a half after the campaign launch, the mango industry has been granted an emoji.

The mango industry is today celebrating after confirmation from Unicode that the tropical fruit will be granted its own emoji.

Smartphone users will have access to 157 new emojis this year including a kangaroo, shopping receipt, bagel and red-headed characters.

The mango industry has spent the last 18 months campaigning for a mango emoji, with the hashtag #MangoEmojiPlease attached to most of Australia's mango marketing.

Treena Welch from the Australia Mango Industry Association said Thursday's news was exciting.

"It means people across the world can use this emoji to applaud mangoes," she said.

"The more applause we get, the more interest there'll be in mangoes, so we'll be able to use this to growers' advantage."

But don't reach for your smartphone yet — the mango emoji will not be available until mid-year.

"It'll be available in June, which means as we come into the next mango season in Australia we'll have a mango emoji to express our love," Ms Welch said.

The Australian mango season is expected to last another six to eight weeks, with fruit still being picked from regions in southern Western Australia and central Queensland.

The mango industry is expecting the 2017/18 season to be the most valuable crop on record, with more than 9 million trays produced.
