Mangled wreck of car after mum and daughter seriously injured in drink-driver smash

This shocking photo shows the mangled wreckage of a car after a mother and daughter were seriously injured when a drink-driver smashed into them head on.

Linda Newton had just picked up her daughters Jessica, 12, and Chloe, nine, from choir practice and was heading home in Willerby when the female driver smashed into them after travelling on the wrong side of the road.

The 51-year-old and her daughters had to be cut free by firefighters in the freezing cold at 4.30pm on January 22.

Linda, 51, of Skidby, told Hull Daily Mail : “I don’t remember much about the impact itself although my daughter Jessica remembers everything.

“The fire crews had to cut the doors off and the roof to get us out. They even had to cut some of our clothes off before we were blue-lighted to hospital.

“It was really cold and it started to snow. We were trapped in the car for hours. I was in agony and had to be given morphine.

"The worst thing was I could see Chloe in a really bad way but I couldn’t get to her. There was nothing I could do.”

Chloe was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary after suffering a broken pelvis on both sides, a bruised spine, fluid on her lungs and abdomen, bruised internal organs and whiplash.

Linda suffered a broken ankle and needed surgery on her knee. She is still receiving physiotherapy and learning to walk properly again.

Jessica escaped with cuts and bruises.

The drink-driver was charged with two counts of drink-driving and was handed a three-month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, last week.

She was also banned from driving for three years and handed a £200 fine.

Linda said: “I am still receiving physiotherapy once a week and also undergoing hydrotherapy. I still have to use a crutch.

“I am still off work and have not been able to drive since.

Mum says her wedding outfit may upstage bride - but others have bigger issue with it

“Physically, Chloe is fine now but mentally she isn’t. She has nightmares and is very anxious. Both she and Jessica have to share a bed as they are too scared at the moment.

“We are trying to get counselling for Chloe but there is a long list and we are thinking of doing it privately.”

Linda's husband Jon said it was one of the darkest times of his life.

He said: “It was a terrible time and I needed help from other family members. At one point they were going to fly Chloe to Sheffield but that would have been very difficult.

“The injuries to Linda and Chloe were severe and it was a miracle they survived the crash but thankfully Geoffrey (the car) did his job and protected them.”

Linda has urged people to think twice about getting into their car after having a drink.

She said: “It is just not worth it. You can drink as much as you like but how can anyone think it is safe to get in the car and drive?

“I am angry after what she has put me and my family through.”
