Mangled vintage Jaguar sells for £90k despite being untouched after crashing into a tree 25 years ago

A vintage Jaguar has sold at auction for £90,000 despite bearing the marks of a crash from 25 years ago.

The rare XK150 S 3.8 Drophead Coupe has been out of action for a quarter of a century following a collision with a tree in 1996.

The vehicle was listed at Bonhams auctioneers in Oxfordshire with a guide price of £10,000, but it ended up being sold for nine times that, reports HullLive.

With a crumpled bonnet, bent grille, snapped steering wheel, missing headlights, displaced engine and a number plate twisted almost beyond recognition, the once-proud Jaguar's face was a sorry-looking affair heading to the sale.

But auctioneers reassured bidders, saying the damage to the 1960s' classic "looks worse than it is" and that a full restoration could raise the value to £250,000.

The previous owner had been lucky enough to walk away from the crash on a wet Yorkshire road in 1996 and had stored the mangled car in his garage ever since.

The car was auctioned off following his recent death.

Rob Hubbard, head of Bonhams MPH, explained to This is Money: "It has all its original leather and the original matching-numbers engine, which needs to be overhauled as it has not started for more than 25 years.

"The steering wheel is broken from the impact of the crash. However, parts are plentiful and relatively easy to obtain.

"When completely restored the car could be worth between £200,000 and 250,000."
