Mangled remains of a car that police want you to see before you get behind the wheel today

Police shared a horrifying image of a car wrapped around a lamppost on the M62 after a crash shut the motorway today.

The shocking photo shows the mangled wreckage of a red car - and miraculously the driver survived the crash but was hospitalised with serious injuries.

North West Motorway Police tweeted details of the incident and said poor driving conditions due to wet weather could have led to the smash, Manchester Evening News reports.

They wrote: “The RTC on the M62 has been handed over to @HighwaysNWEST  for repairs and recovery. WB (westbound) remains closed at present.

“Just the driver on board who has survived & taken to hospital with injuries.”

The M62 was closed in both directions while emergency crews dealt with the incident, with both carriageways completely sealed off between junction 21 for Milnrow and Rochdale and junction 22 for Denshaw.

Highways England warned drivers to take care during the wet weather, tweeting to say: “There was an incident at about 11:20am between junction 22 and junction 21.

“A car hit a lamppost on the central reservation.

“Contractors are currently on site to remove the lamppost, but the weather is making the operation difficult.

“They will also put a temporary central reservation in to make sure it is safe for drivers.”

North West Motorway Police's shocking photo of the aftermath of the M62 crash attracted a number of comments online, with people commenting on how lucky the driver was to survive.

Gary tweeted: "One very lucky driver to survive the impact."

Callum Sutcliffe said: "Lucky to get out of that alive", while Linda tweeted: "Not sure I've ever seen anything literally wrapped around a post before."

A yellow weather warning from the Met Office has been in place across Merseyside today, with torrential downpours causing trouble on the roads.

The government also issued a number of flood alerts and flood warnings across the region due to high tides and bad weather.
